How can I Get Beautiful Skin for Spring??

First, don't make the mistake of over-scrubbing, over-cleaning, and over-treating. Frosty temperatures may have damaged the outermost protective layer, exposing facial skin to irritants and bacteria.
**spring care salon** visit

Hydration and exfoliation are the keys to smoother skin for spring. Slough off dry skin cells with a gentle exfoliator like Olay Skin Smoothing Cream Scrub, which combines a conditioning beta-hydroxy acid formula with microbeads. Beta-hydroxy acids loosen the dead cells of the epidermis, making room for new growth.
A mild unscented soap that won't strip away natural oils, such as Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser, will reduce moisture loss and maintain a healthy outer-skin layer. Skip the washcloth and use a cleaning device like the Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System for a deeper clean. The brush has hundreds of bristles that lift and whisk away dead skin and dirt.
Rebuild your skin's outer layer with a barrier repair moisturizer such as Cetaphil Restoraderm Skin Restoring Moisturizer, which boosts hydration and reduces water loss. Don't forget to add sunscreen -- SPF 30 or higher. Then add a makeup packed with moisturizers and vitamins (and more sunscreen).

The acne diet

Are you sick of feeling like your skin is under attack from blemishes? Is Acne ruining your confidence, or do you wish you knew how to treat it? Sometimes it can feel that there are so many myth-conceptions around what works to prevent & treat acne that many people think that they’re never going to be able to find an effective cure. However, what if you could eat your way to clearer skin?  In today’s blog, I’m going to show you the Acne Diet that will help you do just that!
Acne vulgaris is determined as a genetic predisposition to a malfunction of the pilo sebaceous unit resulting in the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and or cysts. Acne can be mild or extreme and is graded from 1 – 4 depending on the severity of the condition. Acne develops when the pilosebaceous unit becomes blocked due to sebum and dead skin cells. Acne sufferers tend to produce a thicker, stickier sebum due to higher levels of squalene and wax esters with lower levels of free fatty acids.. Linoleic acid is lower in skin lipids, which is thought to relate further to the congestion. Whilst acne is not an infectious or contagious disease, the naturally present microbes in the skin flora, propionbacterium acnes bacteria, are seen to thrive in an anaerobic environment. This occurs when the follicle becomes blocked and the by products of metabolism from the bacteria may produce inflammation thereby inducing papules and pustules. There is however no real correlation between the number of skin bacteria and the severity or grade of acne. What trigger’s Acne? The most common trigger for acne is often puberty due to surges in androgen hormones that in turn stimulate excess sebum production and hyperkeratosis.

Therapeutic Dietary considerations: Nutritional therapeutic objectives are to reduce the inflammatory response and balance hormones. Wholefood nutrient dense high fibre diet. Avoid processed foods, high sugar and trans/saturated fats. Dietary Therapeutic Inclusions: Increase wholegrains, nuts and seeds to improve selenium, vitamin E and zinc intake for antioxidant protection and zinc aids in skin healingHigh fibre consumption: Such as vegetables, fruits and wholegrain has shown to assist with clearing acne possibly due to correction of the effects of constipation. Adequate fibre is essential to cleanse the colon and eliminate toxins Male acne patients: have decreased levels of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase that is normalised with Vitamin E and selenium. May be low in acne patients. Increase nuts and seeds: to improve niacin, selenium, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids and zinc intake. Patients with acne have low concentrations of linoleic acid in the sebum & EFA deficiency in the epithelium that may account for the characteristic follicular hyperkeratosis acne. Linoleic and linoleic acids and acne vulgaris. Include: a variety of green leafy vegetables and brightly coloured   fruits and vegetables for increased antioxidant protection i.e. vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E Increase: oily fish for essential fatty acids, vitamin D and niacinamide.Drink: at least 8 glasses of filtered water daily to assist with the removal of toxins and waste materials. What To Exclude In Your Diet: Avoid processed foods: And junk foods which are void of nutrients and enzymes. Which junk food has not been clinically proven to cause acne a nutrient dense diet can be beneficial. Avoid skin clogging hydrogenated fats and excess intake of saturated fats such as margarines, pies, cakes, pastries, deep fried foods, fast foods, burgers, fries , full fat cream, butter Dietary fat may be associated with excess sebum production Avoid high Gi and sugar foods such as sugar drinks, processed foods, raw processed sugar, honey, maple syrup, glucose, excess consumption of sweet fruits e.g. grapes, dried fruits. Sugar impairs the immune function and may also promote growth of candida which can sometimes be a contributing factor in acne Smith 2007. A low GI is beneficial to acne suffers Chronic consumption of high GI foods promotes hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance which in turn can increase levels of free insulin and andogens which can aggravate acne formation. Avoid the use of iodised salt and iodine foods such as seaweed, kelp, onions as iodine may worsen acne in certain individuals Hitch JM, Greenburg BG:  Adolescent acne and dietary iodine. Avoid stimulants such as colas, caffeine, coffee, stimulant drugs as these may lower zinc absorption and whilst studies have shown that diet does not cause acne, it may aggravate it. Alcohol may aggravate acne and is high in sugar and puts strain on the liver. Increasing the following nutrients will help clear your system and help you on the way to clearer skin. Specific Nutrients Zinc         Source - Oysters, seafood, lean red meat, nuts and seeds. Vitamin A             Cod liver oil, carrots, apricots, and green leafy vegetables. Milk and cheese. Vitamin E Sources – Milk, wheat germ oil, eggs, asparagus, peas, sunflower seeds, almonds, wheat germ, avocado EFA’s omega 3   EPA and DHA       Sources - Mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna, flaxseeds, flaxseed oil. Vitamin C Ascorbic acid Sources - Parsley, citrus, mangoes, rep peppers, strawberries, kiwi Selenium              . Be patient though as the results of all your hard work can take between 3 – 9 months.

Sensitive skin issue

Up to 50-90% of people suffer with skin sensitivity at some point in their lives. Typically, a sensitive skin tends to be reactive to normal stimuli resulting in stinging, redness and irritation.

How do I know if I have an allergy prone skin?

A true sensitive skin is usually seen in very fair skin and is often associated with individuals that also suffer from eczema, hay fever and or asthma. These people can often have food allergies and be reactive to certain med- ications. This type of sensitive skin is not so common but is allergy prone and best suited to a very gentle and basic skincare routine.

Am I having an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction from products will manifest within 12 – 48hrs after product application and occurs wherever the product was applied. The skin can show signs of redness, swelling, hives and even blisters. If the eyes and lips become swollen this is a sign of a serious allergic reaction and medical attention should be sought immediately.
A skincare patch test is the most appropriate way to determine an ingredient allergy and can be con- ducted by a professional skincare therapist. Always inform your therapist if you know of any ingredient allergies so these can be avoided during the treatment and in any homecare product recommenda- tions.

What if my skin is easily irritated?

Sensitised skin is a far more common issue and can affect anyone. The skin can become sensitised for many reasons resulting in redness, dryness and an impaired barrier function. If the skin has an impaired barrier function it means it has lost protective oils and lipids from the surface making it more reactive to external stimuli.
The good news is that this type of sensitivity can be easily rectified and banished for good by using skincare products rich in humectants and emollients such as hyaluronic acid and essential fats to strengthen and protect the skin. The secret is to introduce products slowly to rebuild the integrity of the skin and to reduce sen- sitivity. Once the skin is in a healthier condition it can then tolerate more active ingredients such as hydroxy acids and retinoids.
Sensitised skin can occur at any time meaning the skin can react to certain skincare ingredients or external stimuli that normally would not be an issue. If you are experiencing sensitivity it could be for a number of reasons such as those listed below -

Causes for sensitive skin

Stress. A poor diet lacking in essential fats and vitamin B. Eating processed foods, alcohol, extremely spicy foods and caffeinated beverages can all make the skin more prone to irritation.
Sleep. Lack of sleep can lower the immune system making the skin less tolerant. Ill health. Colds, flu, medications, and operation can all affect the way the skin responds. The skin can be in a reactive state for weeks after an operation or illness therefore a good diet high in nutrients and a gentle skin care regime is essential during this time.
Air conditioning and extremes of climate. Going on holiday should be a relaxing experience however extremes of temperature, long periods of flying and exposure to pollution can all be drying and sensitising to the skin.
So whilst having an allergy prone skin is a relatively rare condition, sensitised skin is not. Knowing what to avoid and how to treat it is the key to reducing redness and irritation. Next week we will give you the Myth Minx’s top 5 tips to curing sensitive skin.

Fruits for a glowing skin

We also know that a cup of fruit juice a day is sure to guarantee a clear complexion. How about a massage with a fruit pulp or a fruit facial? Fruit facials have been there for at least a decade now. But with people getting more wary of effect of chemicals on the skin, a majority of them are now resorting to using something from their own kitchen. What better way to pamper your skin than with pure stuff which is free of toxins and not harmful to your skin?

 skincare

Banana: This is one fruit that's abundantly available in India all through the year. We know it's a good source of iron, magnesium and potassium and helps reduce menstrual cramps. The effect of banana on skin too is not something that can be ignored. Bananas are rich in vitamin A, B and E and hence works as an anti-aging agent. A fresh mashed banana facial can do wonders for your skin.

Lemon: Lemon juice is an important ingredient in most Indian recipes. This is also a fruit of all seasons and almost always finds place on your kitchen shelf or refrigerator. With its vitamin C content, its juice will keep your skin beautiful. A glass of warm water with a tsp of honey and a dash of lemon juice on an empty stomach every morning is a great skin cleanser. With its astringent properties, it can be used to lighten the skin tone and also diminish acne scars. Rub the inside of a lemon peel on your elbow remove dark spots. Mix lemon and honey and use it as a natural bleach on your skin.Apple: An apple a day keeps the doctor away is cliched, but its health benefits are undisputable. Apple's antioxidant property prevents cell and tissue damage. Studies by nutritionists have shown that apples contain abundant amounts of elastin and collagen that help keep the skin young. Applying a mixture of mashed apple, honey, rose water and oatmeal can act as a great exfoliating mask on your skin.

Orange: Rich in vitamin C that improves skin texture. Like apple, orange too contains collagen that slows skin aging process. Rub the insides of orange on your skin to tighten the skin. Oranges can be dried and powdered and used as a natural scrub. Like lemon, oranges too help clear skin blemishes.

Papaya: The benefits of this fruit on skin have perhaps been talked about since the time of our ancestors. Papaya is rich in antioxidants and contain a special enzyme called papain that can kill dead cells and cure skin impurities. A glass of papaya milk or just applying the flesh of papaya on your skin can do wonders to your skin.

Mango: Rightly called the king of fruits for not just its taste but also for health benefits. The soft pulpy fruit has an amazing effect on skin too. Rich in vitamin-A and rich antioxidants, it fights against skin aging, regenerates skin cells and restores the elasticity of skin.

2014 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is an annual event where all things green emerge. From green beads to green beards, it’s a world-wide celebration of an Irish tradition. The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade marched for the first time more than 250 years ago, on March 17, 1762. That’s fourteen years before the Declaration of Independence. As the 250,000 marchers made their way up 5th Avenue on March 17, 2014, Epoch Times photographers were there to capture their every stride.

Earthquake Today in California: 2 Earthquakes Hit Near Los Angeles, Westwood Monday

earthquake01

Two earthquakes struck near Los Angeles on Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
One 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck in the morning and around an hour later, another 2.7-magnitude quake hit.
Both struck in the area of Westwood, Calif., the USGS said.
Residents in Westwood, Beverly Hills, Universal City, and Santa Monica felt the quake.
The 4.4-magnitude earthquake had a depth of 5.3 miles, while the 2.7-magnitude earthquake had a depth of 4.4 miles.
On Twitter and other social media sites, users said they felt the quakes.
AP update:
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A pre-dawn earthquake rolled across the Los Angeles basin on Monday, rattling residents from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach but causing no reported damage.
The quake’s magnitude was 4.4 and it was centered 15 miles west-northwest of the downtown civic center, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
USGS seismologist Robert Graves called it a typical Southern California quake of moderate magnitude and said expectations would be that damage would be slight, if it occurred at all.
Los Angeles police and fire officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.
“It rocked and rolled for about 10 or 12 seconds. I’m surprised nothing fell off the walls or broke — and nothing did — but it was quite a shaker,” said Brian Bland, a retired AP Radio correspondent who lives in suburban Santa Monica.
The 6:25 a.m. quake occurred at a depth of about 5 miles. There were several aftershocks, including one of 2.7 magnitude that caused very minor shaking, Graves said.
The epicenter was near Sepulveda Pass in the Santa Monica Mountains, about 6 miles from Beverly Hills and 7 miles from Universal City, the USGS said.
It was one of the largest quakes to hit Los Angeles since the 6.7-magnitude Northridge quake killed several dozen and caused $25 billion in damage two decades ago, Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, told KABC-TV.
“It’s not that large by California terms. It’s the size of earthquake we have across the state once every couple of months,” Jones said. “But we haven’t had one like this in LA for quite a while.”
A magnitude 4.7 quake struck near Inglewood in 2009, she said.
Broadcasters live on the air immediately announced that an earthquake was occurring. Anchors at KTLA-TV took cover underneath their desk before quickly resuming the broadcast by seeking USGS information.
Californians are taught and practice the “drop, cover and hold” technique to prevent injury from falling debris.

Food Squibs: No Peek Leprechaun Chicken Recipe for St. Pat’s

SQUIB: a : a short humorous or satiric writing or speech; b : a short news item. (Merriam-Webster)
This Food Squib packs a pot of gold at the end of its rainbow — only in the form of crispy well-seasoned chicken skin. That can disappoint Leprechaun hunters in search of precious metals, but it's the best I can do.
lep
Just as you're not supposed to be able to spot a leprechaun — even on St. Patrick's Day – you're not supposed to spy what's under the foil of this No Peek Leprechaun Chicken until it's done cooking.
It's an easy recipe for a guy too busy dying his hair green on 3/17 or expecting to be too hung over on 3/18 to do a lot of detailed work in the kitchen.
Materials: One 13×9 greased pan. Foil.
Ingredients: One chicken cut up. Two cups rice (brown or white). One can cream of mushroom soup. One can cream of chicken soup. One can white wine. One envelope onion soup.
Preparation:
  • Mix rice, soups and liquid together.
  • Spread on bottom of 13×9 pan.
  • Place chicken on top of mixture.
  • Cover tightly with foil.
  • Bake for 90 minutes at 350 degrees.
No peeking until time is up, or a Leprechaun will steal your…Actually, no, Nothing gets stolen. You just mess up a good recipe, and that's bad luck.
